Meet Richard Alan White, the 82-year-old retired security guard who is about to make his composerial debut. On Oct. 12, Richard will have his opera “Hester,” based on “The Scarlet Letter” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, professionally performed for the very first time, at the National Opera Center Recital Hall in Manhattan. This utterly determined composer, as reported on by the New York Times, began work on his 900-page opus in the 1970’s, working night shifts on patrol at Columbia, so he could continue composing at his piano by day.
